Bad sleep 'dramatically' alters body

A run of poor sleep can have a potentially profound effect on the internal workings of the human body, say UK researchers.

The activity of hundreds of genes was altered when people's sleep was cut to less than six hours a day for a week.

Writing in the journal PNAS, the researchers said the results helped explain how poor sleep damaged health.

Heart disease, diabetes, obesity and poor brain function have all been linked to substandard sleep.

What missing hours in bed actually does to alter health, however, is unknown.

So researchers at the University of Surrey analysed the blood of 26 people after they had had plenty of sleep, up to 10 hours each night for a week, and compared the results with samples after a week of fewer than six hours a night.

More than 700 genes were altered by the shift. Each contains the instructions for building a protein, so those that became more active produced more proteins - changing the chemistry of the body.

Meanwhile the natural body clock was disturbed - some genes naturally wax and wane in activity through the day, but this effect was dulled by sleep deprivation.

Prof Colin Smith, from the University of Surrey, told the BBC: "There was quite a dramatic change in activity in many different kinds of genes."

Areas such as the immune system and how the body responds to damage and stress were affected.

Prof Smith added: "Clearly sleep is critical to rebuilding the body and maintaining a functional state, all kinds of damage appear to occur - hinting at what may lead to ill health.

"If we can't actually replenish and replace new cells, then that's going to lead to degenerative diseases."

He said many people may be even more sleep deprived in their daily lives than those in the study - suggesting these changes may be common.

Dr Akhilesh Reddy, a specialist in the body clock at the University of Cambridge, said the study was "interesting".

He said the key findings were the effects on inflammation and the immune system as it was possible to see a link between those effects and health problems such as diabetes.

The findings also tie into research attempting to do away with sleep, such as by finding a drug that could eliminate the effects of sleep deprivation.

Dr Reddy said: "We don't know what the switch is that causes all these changes, but theoretically if you could switch it on or off, you might be able to get away without sleep.

"But my feeling is that sleep is fundamentally important to regenerating all cells."

'Sexsomnia' claim actor Simon Morris jailed for raping teenager

The judge said Simon Morris played the role of nice guy

An actor who claimed he was suffering from the sleep disorder sexsomnia when he raped a 15-year-old girl after getting her drunk has been jailed for eight years.

Simon Morris, 42, who has appeared in the TV series Hollyoaks, had claimed to be fast asleep and said he could not remember the attack at a house party.

The judge at Cardiff Crown Court told Morris, from south London, he had "told an endless number of glib lies". 

Morris was found guilty in December.

The trial of the Newport-born actor heard he helped his victim pour champagne before sneaking into her room at 6am and raping her.

Morris denied it was rape, pretending he had no memory of sex because he was asleep.

 'Lies'

He said: "I have a history of sleepwalking, checking my phone, gyrating against door frames and having sex with partners in my sleep."

But Judge Daniel Williams told him: "You told an endless number of glib lies which you hoped would win over the jury.

"But they saw through your lies and saw through you.
"You were unrelenting in your pursuit of your victim. You tried to chat her up, boasting about your career in acting."

The judge said he played the role of nice guy, using his acting skills.

No remorse

  "But there is another side to you - a side that you are unable to recognise how your victim was drunk and vulnerable.
"Your defence was that you were asleep. You have shown no remorse and the only thing that has burdened you is self-pity."
The prosecution said Morris's claim that he suffers from sexsomnia was a "feeble excuses to escape the inevitable".

Prosecutor Sue Ferrier said: "Morris took an interest in the girl - winking at her, helping her pour drinks and even offering her to stay with him in London."

She said the girl got drunk on cocktails and her father put her to sleep upstairs.
"The girl's father tried to wake his daughter at 6am to go home, but as she was fast asleep he left her in the bed for the night.

"By 6.30am the girl was crying rape."
Morris was examined at the Edinburgh Sleep Centre to discover if he has sexsomnia - the medical condition where people engage in sex acts while still asleep.

Psychologist Chris Dzikowski, the centre's director, said after monitoring Morris's sleep patterns in the laboratory, he found the features displayed were consistent with sleepwalking.

But he said: "It is a possibility that in this case he was suffering from sexsomnia - I cannot exclude it."
Morris appeared in Michael Caine film in 2000 film Shiner, TV soap Hollyoaks in 2001, and on the West End stage between 1996 and 2006.

He blew a kiss to his girlfriend as he was led to the cells.
Morris was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.

Mosquitoes ignore repellent Deet after first exposure

 

Deet works the first time, but for some hours afterwards it loses its power

The widely used insect repellent Deet appears to be losing its effectiveness against mosquitoes, scientists say.

Researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine say mosquitoes are first deterred by the substance, but then later ignore it. 

They say more research is needed to find alternatives to Deet, which was first developed by the US military.

The research was carried out on Aedes aegypti, a species of mosquito that spreads dengue and yellow fever.

The findings are published in the journal Plos One.

Dr James Logan from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said: "The more we can understand about how repellents work and how mosquitoes detect them, the better we can work out ways to get around the problem when they do become resistant to repellents."

Human bait

Deet - or N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide - is one of the most widely used active ingredients in insect repellents. It was developed by the US military, following its experience of jungle warfare during World War II.

For many years, it was not clear exactly how the chemical worked, but recent research suggests that insects simply do not like the smell.

However, there are concerns that some mosquitoes are growing resistant to it.

To find out more, researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine took some A. aegypti mosquitoes in the laboratory, and tempted them with a human arm covered in Deet.

As expected, the repellent put the insects off their potential meal.

However, a few hours later when the same mosquitoes were offered a chance to dine again, the researchers found that the Deet was less effective.

To investigate why this might be happening, the researchers attached electrodes to the insects' antenna.

Dr Logan explained: "We were able to record the response of the receptors on the antenna to Deet, and what we found was the mosquitoes were no longer as sensitive to the chemical, so they weren't picking it up as well.

"There is something about being exposed to the chemical that first time that changes their olfactory system - changes their sense of smell - and their ability to smell Deet, which makes it less effective."

Arms race

Earlier research by the same team found that genetic changes to the same species of mosquito can make them immune to Deet, although it was not clear if there were any mosquitoes like this in the wild.

Dr Logan said it was vital to understand both these permanent genetic and temporary olfactory changes that were taking place.

He said: "Mosquitoes are very good at evolving very very quickly."

He stressed that the findings should not stop people from using Deet in high risk areas, but that they would help scientists who are trying to find new versions that could be effective.

To follow up on the study, the researchers now plan to find out how long the effect lasts after the initial exposure to the chemical.

The team would also like to study the effect in other mosquitoes, including the species that transmit malaria.

North Korea to offer mobile internet access

 

North Korean mobile phone provider Koryolink is planning to launch a 3G data service for foreign visitors and residents from abroad.

Egyptian telecoms firm Orascom, which is a partner in Koryolink, estimates that more than 1 million North Koreans use mobile phones.

They will not be able to use the new service, according to reports.

Orascom launched a 3G phone network inside North Korea in 2008, but users can only use it to make phone calls.

International calls, including calls to South Korea, are banned.

In January 2013 the government began allowing foreign visitors to bring their own mobile devices into the country with them for the first time.

Following a recent visit to the notoriously closed country, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt wrote in a blog post that North Korea's decision to isolate itself "is very much going to affect their physical world and their economic growth."

He added that it would be "very easy" for 3G internet access to be enabled on the existing service.

Current internet access is extremely limited for locals, with most people only having access to a small number of state-run pages.

North Korea expert Scott Thomas Bruce previously told the BBC this comprises mainly of "message boards, chat functions, and state sponsored media".

"The system they've set up is one that they can control and tear down if necessary," he said.

Syria footballer 'killed in Damascus stadium attack'

 

A Syrian footballer has been killed in a mortar strike near a stadium in Damascus, the state news agency says.

Sana news agency says two shells landed near Tishreen stadium in Baramkeh district, where Al-Wathba and Al-Nawair teams were preparing to train.

Several other players were injured in the attack "by terrorists", Sana said.

It comes a day after state media said two mortars landed near Tishreen presidential palace in another area of Damascus without reports of injuries. 

Rebels and troops have been fighting in and around Damascus for months.

Opposition sources say more than 50 people were killed in Damascus suburbs on Tuesday.

Elsewhere, at least 31 people were also killed on Tuesday in an army rocket attack in Syria's second city, Aleppo, eyewitnesses and activists said, in one of the deadliest incident in recent days.

The UN says about 70,000 people have been killed in the conflict since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began in March 2011. 

'Hit in neck'

Homs-based club Al-Wathba and Al-Nawair, from Hama, were getting ready to go to the stadium when the shells struck, reports say.

The players, who were staying in a nearby complex, were hit by shrapnel, the reports said.

AFP news agency quoted an unnamed sports official as saying four Al-Nawair players were injured. 

The dead footballer was named as Youssef Sleiman, who belonged to Al-Wathba.

"We were collecting our things about to head to the stadium when we heard the first explosion and the windows were blown off,'' Ali Ghosn, a 20-year-old player, told the Associated Press.

"Youssef was hit in the neck. We ran out to the corridor when the second explosion struck and I saw Youssef fall down bleeding from his neck,'' he said.

A Lebanese judge meanwhile has recommended the death penalty for a former pro-Syrian Lebanese minister for allegedly plotting attacks.

Michel Samaha is accused, along with Syrian security chief Ali Mamlouk, of "transporting explosives from Syria to Lebanon in an attempt to assassinate Lebanese political and religious leaders," according to a copy of the indictment seen by AFP.

Mr Samaha, a member of parliament, was arrested in Beirut in August, while Mr Mamlouk remains free.

The former minister's arrest came as a surprise in Lebanon, where the current coalition government includes Syria's allies.

Nestle removes beef pasta meals after finding horsemeat

 

Nestle, the world's biggest food company, has removed beef pasta meals from shelves in Italy and Spain after tests revealed traces of horse DNA.

The Swiss-based firm has halted deliveries of products containing meat from a German supplier.

Nestle is the latest in a string of major food producers to find traces of horsemeat in beef meals.

A spokesman for the company said levels of horse DNA were very low but above 1%.

Last week the firm said its products did not contain horsemeat.

Nestle withdrew two chilled pasta products, Buitoni Beef Ravioli and Beef Tortellini, in Italy and Spain.

Lasagnes a la Bolognaise Gourmandes, a frozen product for catering businesses produced in France, will also be withdrawn.

A spokesman for the company told the BBC that Nestle had identified a problem with a supplier from Germany.

'New tests'

 

 

A statement on the Nestle website identified the supplier as HJ Schypke, a sub-contractor of JBS Toledo, a major meat processing company based in Belgium.

"There is no food safety issue, but the mislabelling of products means they fail to meet the very high standards consumers expect from us," the statement said.

In addition to removing the three affected products from sale, Nestle would be "enhancing our existing comprehensive quality assurance programme by adding new tests on beef for horse DNA prior to production in Europe", it added. 

The BBC's Imogen Foulkes in Geneva says the news that the world's biggest food producer is now having to withdraw some foods, shows the problem is far wider than previously thought and, critics say, how dangerously unregulated the food industry has become.

The widening scandal over mislabelled horsemeat has affected at least 12 European countries, including Switzerland, where the retailer Co-op - famous for its broad range of organic, locally-sourced food - was on Monday forced to remove nine different products from its shelves.

Last Wednesday, the company said it had found horsemeat in its own-brand frozen lasagne produced by the Comigel food processing company in France.

Co-op now faces possible charges of negligence from the Swiss authorities.

France meanwhile partially lifted a production ban for another meat processing firm, Spanghero.

The French government revoked its licence last week over suspicions that Spanghero knowingly sold horsemeat labelled as beef, an allegation the company rejects.

The French authorities said that unwitting workers should not be penalised.

As a result the firm will be allowed to produce minced meat, sausages and ready-to-eat meals, but not to stock frozen meat.

Meanwhile the UK and Germany have also both pledged to step up testing of frozen food products.

No Afghan help for residential air strikes - Karzai

Mr Karzai said a decree would be issued on Sunday

Afghan security forces are to be banned from calling for foreign air strikes in residential areas, President Hamid Karzai has said. 

Mr Karzai said he would issue a decree on Sunday, less than a week after 10 civilians were killed in a night raid in the eastern province of Kunar. 

Nato-led forces in Afghanistan are not expected to make a formal response until the full decree has been issued.

Civilian casualties are a source of tension between Afghan and Nato forces.

"I will issue a decree [on Sunday] that no Afghan security forces, in any circumstances can ask for the foreigners' planes for carrying out operations on our homes and villages,'' Mr Karzai said in a speech at the Afghan National Military Academy in Kabul.

"Our forces ask for air support from foreigners and children get killed in an air strike," he added.

Limited strength

 

Nato troops are scheduled to withdraw from Afghanistan by the end of 2014 and have gradually been handing over responsibility for security to their Afghan counterparts.

Mr Karzai said Afghans were "happy" about the withdrawal.

"We are happy for all their help and assistance so far, but we do not need foreign forces to defend our country. We want our Afghan forces to defend their homeland," he said.

The BBC's Karen Allen, in Kabul, says Afghan forces now lead 90% of all security operations.

Yet the Afghan air force has limited strength, so Nato air support is considered crucial, especially for operations in harsh terrain and mountainous areas, our correspondent says.

Most of the 10 civilians killed in the 13 February air strike on Kunar were women and children. 

Four Taliban fighters also died in the attack, in the Shegal district of Kunar, which borders Pakistan. The Afghan army said the dead men had links to al-Qaeda.

Mr Karzai said he had been told the air strike was requested by Afghan forces.

"If this is true, it is very regrettable and it is very shameful. How could they ask foreigners to send planes and bomb our own houses?" he said.

"I agree we are passing through a challenging phase, but we are the owners of this country... and fortunately, we will show to the world that we can protect our country," said President Karzai.

The deaths in Kunar came just after US President Barack Obama confirmed plans for the withdrawal of about half the 66,000 US troops in Afghanistan by early 2014.

Last year a US drone attack in the same area killed Mullah Dadullah, a high-ranking Pakistani Taliban commander.

Civilian casualties rose sharply in every year from 2008 to 2011, though they fell in the first half of 2012, according to figures from the UN mission in Afghanistan.

The figures cover deaths caused both by Nato forces, allied with government troops, and by insurgents. 

A UN report earlier this month accused the US of killing hundreds of children in air strikes over the past four years.

The number of child casualties had doubled in 2010-2011 due to a "lack of precautionary measures and use of indiscriminate force", the study found.

The Nato-led Isaf force called the claims "categorically unfounded" and "false".
